About the Author

Hubertus Knabe

Born in Unna in 1959, Dr. Hubertus Knabe studied history and German language and literature in Bremen and received his doctorate in Berlin. For more than 40 years, he has been working and publishing on the GDR and communism. His work includes more than a dozen books and over two hundred essays and newspaper articles. From 1992 to 2000, he was a leading scholar at the Stasi Records Agency. Subsequently, he directed the memorial at the former Stasi prison Berlin-Hohenschönhausen for 18 years. He investigated the Ministry for State Security's work in the West on behalf of the German Bundestag.
