The perpetrators are among us

The renowned historian Hubertus Knabe draws a sobering conclusion about how we deal with the GDR's past. For more than three decades, the unjust SED regime has been downplayed and whitewashed. Especially among the younger generation, there is an alarming lack of knowledge about the extent of political persecution in the GDR. While all National Socialist organizations were banned after the end of the Nazi regime, the state party of the GDR merely changed its name. Under the name "Die Linke" (The Left), it now sits in the Bundestag and in many state parliaments, partly with governmental responsibility. What went wrong after German reunification? Knabe mercilessly analyzes how SED functionaries and Stasi employees saved themselves in the new era and how their victims were left alone. His book is the only comprehensive account of why the reappraisal of the communist dictatorship in Germany largely remained unsuccessful.
