Few people realize the extent of Stasi activities in the old Federal Republic. Historian Hubertus Knabe researched in the former Stasi archives and shows in detail how the GDR secret service infiltrated the West. More than 20,000 West Germans regularly provided information from parties, businesses, churches, media, intelligence services, and the Bundeswehr. From Heinrich Lübke's resignation from office to the vote of no confidence against Chancellor Willy Brandt, from the student movement to the anti-rocket protests of the 1980s – the Stasi was always involved. Knabe's book chillingly illustrates how much the GDR secret service is an all-German problem.
