Liberation Day?

Shootings, rapes, looting – Russia's war against Ukraine evokes memories of the Red Army's invasion of East Germany in 1945. Even then, soldiers mercilessly targeted uninvolved civilians. And, as today, they were followed by secret police units who spread fear and terror with arrests and torture. Eighty years after the end of the Second World War, the events of that time have gained a terrifying topicality. The historian Hubertus Knabe, a prominent expert on GDR history, describes in a compelling way the actions of the Soviet troops in East Germany: the brutal violence against women and the elderly, the abduction of tens of thousands to the Gulag, the arbitrary mass arrests, and the revival of the National Socialist concentration camps. The terror of the post-war period created the conditions for the establishment of the more than 40-year SED dictatorship in East Germany.
