No matter what one may think of Norman Mailer as a writer and as a man, one thing is undeniable: the consistency in his life and work, his courage to embrace the uncomfortable, to explore the problems of human existence, his courage for self-knowledge and confession. Mailer's confession – deliberately understated by the author as "Advertisements for Myself" – brings together what was written between and after his well-known major novels: stories, novel beginnings and fragments, essays, attempts at dramatic form. Mailer connects all of this with his "advertisement," which testifies to unusual openness, boldness, pugnacity, even stubbornness and arrogance. One could view the whole thing as a single challenge to his contemporaries, if it were not also clear that Mailer was challenging himself, cornering himself, and trying to scrutinize himself, as well as his time.
