Whatever one may think of Norman Mailer, both as a writer and as a person, one thing is undeniable: his consistency in life and work, his courage to tackle uncomfortable truths, to explore the problems of human existence, his courage for self-knowledge and confession. Mailer's confession – deliberately understated by the author as "Advertisements for Myself" – brings together what was written between and after his well-known major novels: short stories, novel beginnings and fragments, essays, attempts at dramatic form. Mailer combines all this with his "Advertisements," which testify to unusual frankness, audacity, pugnacity, indeed even ferocity and arrogance. One could view the whole thing as a singular challenge to his contemporaries, were it not also apparent that Mailer thereby challenges himself, cornering himself and attempting to scrutinize himself, as well as his time.
