"To praise or not to praise this book, written in highly poetic language aglow with passion, is equally difficult. For astonishment outweighs delight, pensiveness outweighs any feeling of rejection or approval. How is this possible in a narrative that tells of nothing but love?
What strangeness is among people, here among lovers, probably cannot be told more shockingly. Meckel wants to say: We do not know each other. Light is blinding. The pensiveness that remains invalidates the formal objections. Meckel was never better than in this book conceived against all reason."
