"It is equally difficult to praise or not to praise this book, written in highly poetic, passion-filled language. For astonishment outweighs delight, and contemplation outweighs any feeling of rejection or approval. How is this possible in a narrative that tells of nothing but love?
The strangeness between people, here between lovers, could hardly be told in a more shocking way. Meckel wants to say: We do not know each other. Light is blinding. The lingering thoughtfulness invalidates formal objections. Meckel was never better than in this book, conceived against all reason."
