Germany's Blue Wonder
The AfD and populism
An analytical essay.
How did the AfD get so big?
Available immediately
For too long, too many hoped that the AfD was just a temporary disruption to German normality. Exclusion and ostracism seemed sufficient to deal with it. But now, widespread fear is emerging, as the rise of right-wing populism and radicalizing right-wing parties is a Europe-wide phenomenon. Countering only internal German causes does little to help.
According to its self-perception, the AfD is an alternative to policies damaging to the fatherland, resists an emerging dictatorship, could lead Germany towards glorious times – and is not too squeamish for the rough stuff in all of this. From an external perspective, it is a protest movement with constitutionally dangerous political aspirations that has so far refused to integrate into the state-supporting party system.
What specific policy recommendations can be given?
