Rafi, Jewboy

In 1957, Ludwig and Hannah Seligmann return to Germany with their 10-year-old son Rafael. They find it difficult to settle back into their old homeland. Rafi and his father increasingly suffer from prejudice. The family eventually moves to Munich, where they gradually acclimate. Despite all obstacles, the dreamy academic underachiever Rafael graduates high school, studies history, and – against his mother's bitter resistance – has a relationship with Ingrid, a "shiksa." In the third part of his family saga, Rafael Seligmann tells of his father's difficult search for his lost homeland with as much empathy as unsentimentality. His novel is also a piece of contemporary history from a Germany where responsibility for the past was barely anchored in public consciousness.
