It is a happy childhood, followed by fulfilling teenage years. His father is a well-situated merchant; faith and tradition shape the family's life. As the only one of his siblings, Ludwig is allowed to attend grammar school. He coaches the football team and sings in the synagogue choir. These are the last golden years of German-Jewish coexistence, which came to a cruel end in 1930 with the rise of the Nazis. "Run away, as far as you can!" the local priest admonishes the two brothers Ludwig and Heinrich Seligmann. Shortly thereafter, in March 1933, the young men flee Nazi Germany for France.
