Armies of the Night

Mailer's brilliantly written eyewitness account of the large anti-Vietnam rally in Washington in October 1967. The demonstration culminated in a march on the Pentagon, where many, including Norman Mailer himself, voluntarily allowed themselves to be arrested. The author and journalist, who walks through these four October days as his own comical hero, describes himself and the events with disarming honesty. Mailer sees the USA at the end of the 1960s as a country on the brink of totalitarianism – an almost prophetic anticipation of the conditions in America today.
