Merciless

This is the story of Gary Gilmore, the murderer who desperately wanted to be executed. But because no death sentence had been carried out in the USA for ten years at the time of the verdict, his "death wish" embarrassed the judiciary and his case became a sensation. Former "Life" photographer Larry Schiller invested $100,000 for interviews, letters, and every other document related to Gilmore. On January 17, 1977, Gary Gilmore was shot. Afterwards, Schiller handed over all his material to Norman Mailer, and the Pulitzer Prize winner created a masterpiece with "The Executioner's Song."
