The Naked and the Dead

Norman Mailer became world-famous overnight at the age of 25 with his debut novel "The Naked and the Dead". In 1944, he volunteered for military service and fought on the American side in the Pacific. As an eyewitness, he describes in a reportage style the daily life at the front with all its horrors. However, Mailer focuses much more on describing his comrades, their feelings, their fear, and their suffering. This makes them visible and alive, emerging from their anonymity. Alongside the personal stories, the overarching question always remains: what goes on in a person who is willing to die on command?
