We live in an era of an infinitely growing flood of media. What we believe we know about the world through news is becoming increasingly diffuse due to fake news, propaganda, and opinion pieces. In addition, there is an advocacy journalism that the book "Die Medienkrieger" (The Media Warriors) exposes as an existential threat to Germany.
Journalist Michael Clasen has written a stirring plea for the restoration of quality, neutrality, and pluralism of opinion in the media. The pursuit of truthfulness is the main task of journalism, not the pronouncement of supposed truths.
Using explosive case studies – from Trump to the war in Ukraine, from climate anxiety to corona panic and the refugee debate – Clasen shows how established media, from ARD to ZDF, control our perception through selective reporting, framing, and emotionalization.
Too many journalists in Germany adhere to a green-woke worldview, which they spread with pedagogic zeal. They no longer report what is, but try to educate – and to brand critical minds as "right-wing" in order to exclude them from public discourse. This is one reason why many Germans are afraid to express their opinion freely. Moreover, this advocacy journalism destroys the credibility of established media, which is fatal: It accelerates the economic decline of many private media houses. Who would willingly spend money on something they distrust?
The media world as we know it is in an existential crisis. And parts of it will perish. For instance, printed newspapers will soon be history. This trend will be radically exacerbated by the impending AI revolution. The battlefields of the media world are expanding: With the rapid rise of Big Tech and the triumph of artificial intelligence, the power of mass manipulation threatens to concentrate in the hands of a few – like Elon Musk or Mark Zuckerberg.
"Die Medienkrieger" sheds light on the mechanisms of this modern influence and calls for a fundamental debate about the media world of the future to protect democracy from destruction through controlled narratives. An indispensable wake-up call for all who want to look behind the headlines.
Clasen: “For the future of democracy, a functioning, independent, and pluralistically organized Fourth Estate is essential – otherwise, Germany and Europe face tyrannical times. Compared to the USA and China, we already resemble digital subjects."
