Dr. Friedrich Pürner knows what he's talking about. As head of the public health office, he experienced the first two waves of the coronavirus pandemic at a focal point of the events. His conclusion: that Corona became a crisis of such magnitude is not primarily due to the dangerousness of the virus, but to the flaws in our healthcare system. The entanglement of politics and medicine has had partly fatal consequences that went unnoticed for a long time. Corona acts like a magnifying glass, as we are truly experiencing these effects for the first time during the crisis. Even if we get the current pandemic under control, the next one may push public health care even more clearly to its limits. Are we prepared for this? No, says the public health physician. We must finally address the structural problems, eliminate shortcomings, and set quality standards to be able to meet future challenges.
