Nightmare childcare

Autonomy in old age is a valuable asset in our society. But what if it is lost due to illness, accident, or dementia? Most people have not made provisions for such a case. Heidrun Lange experienced firsthand the consequences this can have: an external guardian was appointed by the court for her parents, who subsequently also had power over their residence and family finances. She recorded her experiences, especially how those affected and their relatives are exposed to the "guardianship system," in diary form. Her book is a personal account, but also an informative guide that explains the legal situation in Germany. It is an urgent appeal to address this existentially important topic.
