Nightmare care

Autonomy in old age is a valuable asset in our society. But what happens if it is lost due to illness, accident, or dementia? Most people have not made provisions for this eventuality. Heidrun Lange experienced firsthand the consequences this can have: an external guardian was appointed by the court for her parents, who from then on also had control over their whereabouts and the family finances. She recorded her experiences, especially how those affected and their relatives are subjected to the "guardianship system," in a diary. Her book is a personal account, but also an informative book that explains the legal situation in Germany. It is an urgent appeal to address this existentially important topic.
