Our civil society is under a pincer attack on normalcy – on the one hand by the "wokeness" of cultural revolutionaries, and on the other by the alarmism of the political and media elite. Wokeness turns the relationship between normal and pathological on its head. Alarmism turns the relationship between normal and extreme on its head.
What was once considered neurosis is now to be recognized as a self-determined way of life. This has created a cultural climate of absolute tolerance, which, however, manifests itself as absolute intolerance towards traditional ways of life. Thus, war is declared on normalcy.
Equally perverted is the relationship between normalcy and the state of emergency in the world of media and politics. Here, an alarmism prevails that sees only catastrophes everywhere. This is the common denominator of sensational journalism, compliant science, and a politics of fear, as we experienced during the COVID-19 era.
However, there are now signs that after the political generation of do-gooders, a skeptical generation is emerging that will clean up the woke spook. This fuels the hope of a return from the moral excesses and nihilistic self-doubt of the West to a self-evident moral normalcy.
At the moment, many only see the signs of decadence, but in the end, wokeness will have been the provocation that led to a rebirth of civility.
