Return to Vienna

Hilde Spiel's diary from 1946 is a historical document of exceptional quality. It testifies both to the author's perspicacity and – precisely and lovingly observed – to the remaining flair of the city of Vienna, shaken to its foundations. After Hilde Spiel fled to London in 1936 to escape the Nazis, she returns to Vienna as a post-war correspondent. With great sensitivity and touching detail, she describes what is happening in the city and within herself, with an "almost blind passion for all embodiments of the old Austria, which now only exists in rudimentary and illusory forms."
