Religion and Humor in the Life and Work of Franz Kafka

Felix Weltsch wrote a small, impressive study about his long-deceased friend Franz Kafka after World War II. It was published in 1957 in Berlin under the title Religion and Humor in the Life and Work of Franz Kafka. He examined, not least, these aphorisms, which fascinated the philosopher (Weltsch). He saw that these aphorisms do not result in a coherent worldview; each thought stands on its own, some complement each other, others illuminate each other. Weltsch: It cannot be denied that such systematic registration reveals contradictions. Can all these paths coexist? Or can they be interpreted until they finally lead to a clear path to salvation? That would probably not be the right approach. Rather, it is precisely these ambiguities that belong to Kafka's religious position. The transcendence itself is never doubted.
