Milena
Kafka's girlfriend
Available immediately
In October 1940, Margarete Buber-Neumann and Milena Jesenská met for the first time at the "Wailing Wall." This is what Milena called the narrow path between the back of the barracks and the high wall that surrounded the Ravensbrück women's concentration camp. The book "Milena – Kafka's Friend" is the legacy of the friendship that developed there.
For Milena, Kafka's prose was the most perfect thing there was. She translated "The Judgment" and "The Metamorphosis" from German into Czech, becoming their first translator. In connection with this work, she wrote a letter to the poet, who was then staying at a spa in Merano. That was the beginning of the love between Kafka and Milena, as evidenced by Kafka's surviving letters. She died in Ravensbrück on May 17, 1944.
