In his autobiography, Alain Finkielkraut focuses on the formative stages of his intellectual development. The great French philosopher addresses themes that have accompanied him throughout his life: the 1968 movement, his Jewish heritage, the racism debate, and the State of Israel. He engages with the thoughts and inspirations of intellectual companions such as Martin Heidegger, Milan Kundera, and Michel Foucault, philosophizes about his European identity, and about its threat from multiculturalism. Thus, the controversial thinker not only takes stock of himself and his work, but also of European society at the turn of a new millennium.
