MR. FAUSTINI leaves the house after a long, icy winter in search of moments of life. "THE WOMAN'S EYES in the fur coat grew noticeably larger. She clutched her shopping basket. The flower seller took her hand and brought it to his mouth, giving her a look that Mr. Faustini knew from the cinema. Film heroes resorted to this look when there was no time to lose, for instance, when the husband was distracted for a moment. This look was an agreement, a promise, a conspiracy.
