It is thanks to Brigitte Klump's persistence that the GDR was blacklisted by the UN Human Rights Commission in 1980. It was not easy to convince a world authority like the UN of the misconduct of one of its members, which also held a seat on the UN Security Council. However, the GDR agreed to investigate and rectify the legal violations it was accused of. Thousands of GDR citizens were subsequently allowed to leave the country. And all this without "special efforts by the West German federal government," which had previously bought the freedom of people for around 100 million Marks annually. Brigitte Klump's report on national and international politics reads as excitingly as a crime novel. Her book is a unique document of contemporary history, which, on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the Berlin Wall's construction, reminds us of the bitter injustice under the GDR regime and is definitely worth re-reading.
