Erwin Wickert (1915-2008), father of Tagesthemen anchorman Ulrich Wickert, was the epitome of the cosmopolitan and cultured diplomat and one of the most interesting contemporary witnesses of the 20th century. In 1939, Wickert was sent to Tokyo and Shanghai as the first German radio attaché; he was a successful writer and, in 1966, authored the famous "Peace Note," which initiated the détente policy towards the Eastern Bloc. Ulrich Kulke got to know this extraordinary man personally in intensive conversations and describes his eventful life, from his adventures as a hobo in America to his role as an unconventional doyen of the foreign service.
