This standard work on the prehistory, course, and consequences of the expulsion of Germans from the former Eastern territories already caused a stir in 1977, after the publication of the English original (Nemesis at Potsdam).
In this expanded and updated version, de Zayas primarily examines the disastrous role of the Western Allies. He refutes the Soviet-Polish-Czechoslovakian thesis that the resettlement took place in accordance with Article XIII of the Potsdam Protocol and outlines Anglo-American ideas of a "regulated and humane" resettlement. He criticizes Churchill's recklessness in Tehran and Moscow as well as Roosevelt's dilettantism, but also shows Churchill's learning process up to and after Potsdam and the efforts of the USA to limit the expulsion.
Furthermore, de Zayas discusses the reception and integration of the expellees in the Federal Republic of Germany, as well as the Charter of the German Expellees and the international legal standardization of the right to a homeland by the United Nations and the Council of Europe. Finally, the author outlines the perspectives that have emerged 60 years after the expulsion, taking into account the planned establishment of the "Center Against Expulsions" in Berlin and the eastward expansion of the EU into Poland and the Czech Republic.
