Few accusations could be more serious: Pope Pius XII allegedly remained silent when he learned of Hitler's plan to exterminate the Jews of Europe. He even supposedly stood idly by as Roman Jews were deported to death camps practically under his window. But this version, also known as the "black legend," is false. The evidence that it was entirely different lay under lock and key in the Vatican's secret archive for half a century. In 2018, the many hundreds of thousands of files will finally be made available for research. Dr. h. c.
