The continuation of the novel "The House of Dark Jugs".

A magnificent family story from the Austro-Hungarian era. The children of Captain Bourdanin seek their way amidst the uncertain period of upheaval before the First World War. Six characters with very different fates: Captain Bourdanin, the tyrannical father, isolated after the death of his eldest son. The abused Roderich becomes an adventurer. Lily, who was prophesied a short life from childhood, becomes a strong figure full of zest for life. The devoted wife Marie tries to be a comforting mediator between children and father - an almost impossible task.

Between Vienna, Pilsen, and Galicia, a masterful portrait of an era doomed to decline emerges. The background of this novel is old Austria, the multinational state with its nationality struggles and social upheavals. And finally, one of the children, following the spirit of postmodernism, promises to tell and reinterpret everything past. For, as the motto of the book says: Nothing is preserved except through transformation.
