1952: Obtains his doctorate (Dr. rer. pol.) at the University of Berne. Thesis: "The Schumann Plan especially in view of the Franco-German Steel Industry".

1953: Administrator at the European Productivity Headquarters of "Organisation for European Economic Cooperation (OEEC)" in Paris

1954: Personal assistant of Heinrich Nordhoff, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Volkswagen AG

1955 - 1958: Head of Export Promotion at Volkswagenwerk GmbH

1959 - 1964: Chief Executive Officer at Volkswagen of America, Inc.

1964: Appointed as deputy member on the Board to the Board of Directors of Volkswagenwerk AG, Division "Sales"

July 1st 1965 to December 1972: Ordinary member of the Board of Directors of Volkswagenwerk AG, Division "Sales"

March 1973 to December 31st, 1981: Chairman of the Board of Directors of Continental Gummi-Werke AG in Hanover, Germany

January 1st, 1982 to December 31st, 1992: Chairman of the Board of Directors of Volkswagen AG

After retirement: Assumes responsibility for "Einkaufsoffensive Neue (from January 1st, 1993) Bundesländer", member of the Speaking Committee of "wir.", an initiative of the West German economy for the promotion of the economic restructuring process in East Germany after the opening of the Wall.

Takes on numerous national and nternational mandates as a member of the Supervisory Board. Currently still at: Atradius, Hawesko (both Germany), Perot Systems Corporation (USA), Indesit Company (Italy). Advisory Board: Textron (USA).

1993 - 1996: Chairman of the Board of Administration of Saurer Ag, Arbon, Switzerland

1999: Award: One of ten "Corporate America`s Outstanding Directors"

1996- 3/2005: Advisor of Kirghiz President Askar Akaev for questions concerning the economy.

The initiator of the museum of fine arts in Wolfsburg, Germany, Hahn is one of the members of its Board of Trustees.

A member in various political and cultural organisations, among which are: the Board of Directors of Lauder, Institutes-Wharton School/ University Pennsylvania, the International Advisor Committee of Salk Institute, La Jolla, California, as well as the Board of Directors of Mayo-Clinic-Foundation in Germany and the Board of Trustees of the Foundation of the Cloister Ilsenburg in Saxony-Anhalt (deputy chairman).

2002 : Appointed honorary professor for "Industrial Enterprise Strategies" at the University of Western Saxony Zwickau (FH)

Hahn received academic honours and was awarded high national and international medals from eight different universities inside and outside of Germany.
