Mandela's difficult legacy
South Africa at the crossroads
An impressive account of a country caught between chaos and hope
World Cup 2010 – All eyes are turned towards South Africa, full of expectation. Is the country on the Cape ready to meet the largest influx of visitors in its history? Hans-Joachim Löwer takes a look behind the scenes of the great footballing event, and at the lives of ordinary people in South Africa. He travels 18,000 kilometres through the length and breadth of the country, and recounts sobering stories of violence and corruption, xenophobia, and AIDS. From first-hand experiences, he provides detailed descriptions of the dreams of the black people and the fears of the white people. But there is also hope, from those who are reorganising themselves with a view to rescuing Nelson Mandela's policy of reconciliation. An unflinching report that reflects South Africa's inner conflict.
Hans-Joachim Löwer was born in 1948; he spent 16 years as foreign correspondent for Stern magazine, and was editor of the German language edition of National Geographic from 1999 to 2000. He has since worked as a freelance journalist. In 2004, he journeyed through Mexico with illegal migrants, and in 2007, he travelled undercover through Zimbabwe, masquerding as a tourist. Herbig has published the books in which he describes these journeys: »Train Station of Dreamers« and »In the Land of Hatred«.
