Rom, Villa Massimo
With photographs by Lotta Ortheil
POETRY UNDER PINE TREES
The highly talented Lyricist Peter Ka travels from Wuppertal to Rome to try his best at the renowned German Academy Villa Massimo. The scholarship in this strangely isolated cosmos, where artists of all genres have been working studio next to studio for more than a hundred years, will last a whole year. Hanns-Josef Ortheil, once a scholar at the Villa himself, observes and accompanies the extremely sensitive word fetishist during his months in Rome and at his side experiences the secrets of an often highly comical everyday life that varies from ecstasy, over-zeal, megalomania to petty internal debates. A satirically sparkling and Rome-centered novel about the passion of finding the perfect word for something extraordinary!
Hanns-Josef Ortheil was born in Cologne, Germany. He has won numerous awards as a writer and has published novels, novellas, and essays since 1979. Since 2003, he is a professor for creative writing and cultural journalism at Hildesheim University. His daughter Lotta Ortheil, born in Stuttgart, Germany, studies art science and media theory at the Karlsruhe University of Arts and Design after training as a photographer.
