Emperor Maximilian I & the Women
THE »LAST KNIGHT«: HIS LIFE, HIS PASSIONS
HE LOVED WOMEN – Maximilian I (1459–1519), emperor, artist, fighter – was a charming, picture-book heartbreaker. The »Emperor with the flying soles« leads an adventurous life, which at first is infl uenced by his Portuguese mother, Eleonore. Later, his marriage to Maria, the rich heiress of Burgundy, determines his fate. After the tragic death of his beloved wife, the young king searches for distraction by »bedding women« all over the country and fathers numerous children. Maximilian cares for all of them, and they are as close to his heart as his legitimate children, Philipp and Margaret. He also tries to marry off his granddaughters as well as possible. Only his second wife, Bianca Maria Sforza from Milan, fails to fi nd favour in his eyes. He is only interested in the money she brings to the marriage.
