The Master from Shanghai
Novel
Poetic and sensuous: an autobiographical novel about the fate of a young man from China who leaves his homeland behind.
The glorious aroma of the bao-ze-noodles his grandmother used to cook is something he will never forget. But after the Tiananmen Square Massacre the young Qi-Gong and Tai-Chi master Da Lee is looking for a new homeland. Leaving Shanghai behind him he ventures into unknown territory. At first Germany smells and tastes alien, but the authorities are the same everywhere, as he is occasionally forced to notice much to his annoyance. With his unique sensual perception of the world, his awareness of the seemingly small things on the periphery of everyday life, Hong Li Yuan recounts the story of a journey that leads to a new life.
Hong Li Yuan, born in 1957 in Shanghai, studied Chinese and European literature. He spent many years in a monastery in Western China. In 1992 he came to Germany and has been teaching Tai-Chi and Qi Gong at his own school in Stuttgart ever since. His debut novel, „The Temple Bells of Shanghai”, was published by nymphenburger and was a great success.
