Maren Gottschalk, born in 1962 in Leverkusen, studied history and politics, gaining her PhD in medieval history. She has been working as a writer and journalist for WDR, the West German Broadcasting Corporation, for 15 years. She has also published many biographies, most recently on Frida Kahlo. In 2007 she was awarded the Kurt Lorenz Prize.
