Sergiu & Ioana Celibidache
Secrets of a great love
translated from Romanian by Raluca Petrulian
Maestro, privatissimo The magician of sound and a successful painter: Sergiu and Ioana Celibidache have been married for over 30 years. This book of memories has evolved from numerous
conversations between the author and Ioana, the widow of the great conductor, shortly before her death in January 2012. The reader is simply swept away by the intensity of the couple’s life and their love. Encounters with great artists like Yehudi Menuhin and Eugène Ionesco as well as previously unknown anecdotes form a colourful mosaic. Above it all floats the spirit of a woman who has always been so much more than just »the wife of the conductor«. Crisula Stefanescu, born in Romania in 1949, studied philology and later started working as a teacher at the University of Bucharest. After immigrating to Germany in 1982, she worked for Radio Free Europe in Munich. Since 1995, she has earned her living as a writer.
