Over the Alps with Two Elephants
A family treks from Munich to Venice
"Do we have to walk tomorrow, too???": Long-distance hiking with children
Many people dream of hiking, just once in their life, across the Alps and down to the sea. But is it possible for an ordinary family to cover all 557 kilometres of the long-distance walking trail that runs from Munich to Venice? Gerhard von Kapff set out to do just that, in three stages – with his wife Sibylle and their two sons, aged eight and ten. In this book, he recounts the tale of an extraordinary family adventure: an amazing journey that is rich in humour, but also demanded a great deal from those who took part in it – not just physically, but also emotionally. However, alongside hilarious discussions and inventive tactical bribery, the experience gives them all one thing in particular: some serious quality time as a family.
Gerhard von Kapff is sports editor on the Ingolstadt daily newspaper, Donaukurier (the Danube Courier), and regularly reports for the sports and travel sections of various other daily and specialist newspapers. He lives with his wife and two sons in Ingolstadt (Upper Bavaria) and had always wanted to hike across the Alps. Main reason for not doing so: too much time spent away from the family. Solution: "They’ll just all have to come along too!"
