Voodoo
Living with gods and healers in Benin
The mysteries of everyday life in the birthplace of voodoo
Voodoo dolls and zombies? In reality, the oldest religion in the world has very little to do with all that. The voodoo cult´s roots lay in Benin, a small country in Western Africa, from where it spread over the whole world due to slave trade. The cult’s numerous ritualistic acts are still an inherent part of everyday life in Benin – they provide healing and maintain the balance in society. Laura Salm-Reifferscheidt and Ann-Christine Woehrl offer an impressive report on the mystic world of priests, healers and magicians, explaining the cult of ancestors and sacrificial rituals and providing unique photographic insights into the »everyday life« within the voodoo cult.
Ann-Christine Woehrl, born in 1975 in Munich, is a freelance photographer. She has published several books on Latin America, including The Women of Havana, Habanos mi Amor and Montevideo. www.ann-christine-woehrl.com
Laura Salm-Reifferscheidt, born 1976 in Vienna, studied cultural sciences in England and Germany and has worked for various television productions and online news sites. She works as a freelance journalist and author. Her book The Bazaars of Istanbul appeared in September 2008. www.laurasalm.com
